MIAMI (AP) An appeals court has ruled that Argentine soccer great Diego Maradona can pursue a lawsuit against his ex-wife claiming she misappropriated some of his money to buy Florida real estate.
The state 3rd District Court of Appeal ruled Wednesday that a lower court correctly refused to dismiss the lawsuit against Claudia Villafane. Her lawyers argued the case belonged in Argentina, but the judges disagreed.
Maradona and Villafane were married from 1989 to 2003. The lawsuit filed in 2015 claims she improperly used thousands of dollars of his to buy six condominium units in South Florida.
The case now returns to the lower court.
Maradona"s stellar career as player and coach included leading Argentina to the 1986 World Cup championship, in which he won the Golden Ball as top tournament player.
