AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) The Latest on the IndyCar race Saturday night at ISM Raceway (all times local):
Josef Newgarden used four new tires to catch rookie Robert Wickens and win the IndyCar race Saturday night at ISM Raceway.
Newgarden started fourth on a restart with eight laps left, and got around Wickens with three laps left on the 1.022-mile oval. The defending series champion raced to his eighth IndyCar victory and third on an oval, finishing 2.994 seconds ahead of Wickens.
Wickens was making his first oval start, driving for Schmidt Peterson.
Alexander Rossi was third, followed by Scott Dixon and James Hinchcliffe as Honda swept the first five spots in the first oval race of the season.
Robert Wickens had the lead with 75 laps left in the IndyCar race at ISM Raceway.
Making the first oval start of his career, Wickens took the top spot from Schmidt Peterson teammate and fellow Canadian James Hinchcliffe on Lap 149.
Ryan Hunter-Reay was running third in the 250-lap race on the 1.022-mile oval.
Will Power took the IndyCar lead at ISM Raceway when Sebastien Bourdais slid into a crew member in the pits and had a slow first stop.
Power jumped from fourth to first during the stops to lead the field to green on Lap 50. After leading the first 43 laps, Bourdais had to serve a drive-through penalty for hitting the crew member.
Josef Newgarden was running second, followed by Robert Wickens and Ryan Hunter-Reay.
Sebastien Bourdais and Simon Pagenaud took the green flag on an all-French front row Saturday night at ISM Raceway.
Bourdais is coming off a victory in the IndyCar opener on the streets of St. Petersburg, about nine months after the Dale Coyne Racing driver fractured his pelvis and right hip in a crash during Indianapolis 500 qualifying. The four-time CART season champion has 37 race victories.
Pagenaud won last year in the desert for his first oval victory. Team Penske teammate Will Power started third, followed by Andretti Autosports" Alexander Rossi and Schmidt Peterson"s Canadian duo of James Hinchcliffe and Robert Wickens.
The 250-lap race is the first oval event for the sleek new car designed to improve competition and cut costs.
