The Mets are playing well, winning six of their last eight games but they lost last night's series opener 9-5 after an unbelievable game by Cody Bellinger, who hit his 19th home run of the season and threw out two runners from right field. New York is now 26-27, five games behind the Phillies for first place in the National League East.
The Dodgers are on fire, they swept a three-game series against the Pirates over the weekend and they've won six of their last seven games. Los Angeles has the best record in the National League at 36-18 and they lead San Diego by eight games in the National League West.
This game will feature two of the top young hitters in MLB, rookie Pete Alonso and Bellinger. Alonso had an RBI single in his first career at-bat against Clayton Kershaw and a triple off Kenley Jansen. He hit three home runs last week and his 17 this season lead all rookies.
Bellinger's 19 home runs rank second in the majors behind Christian Yelich's 21 and he has six home runs against left-handers this season, matching his total against lefties last year.
Steven Matz (3-3, 3.63 ERA) vs. Rich Hill (1-1, 2.67 ERA, 1.07 WHIP)
Steven Matz is winless in his last three starts but he pitched well against the Nationals last Thursday, giving up just one earned run on 10 hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over six innings to get a no-decision in a 6-4 win. Matz is 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP in four career starts against the Dodgers.
Rich Hill will make his sixth start for the Dodgers after allowing one earned run on five hits (one home run) and two walks with seven strikeouts over six innings to get a no-decision in an 8-1 win against the Rays last Wednesday. Hill is 2-2 with a 7.45 ERA and a 1.72 WHIP in eight career appearances (six starts) against the Mets.
The Over is:
5-1-1 in New York's last seven games when their opponent allows five runs or more in their previous game
5-1-1 in New York's last seven games overall
5-2-1 in Matz's last eight road starts against a team with a winning record
5-0 in Los Angeles' last five games when their opponent allows five runs or more in their previous game
7-0 in Los Angeles' last seven games overall
11-4 in Hill's last 15 home starts
Matz is just 1-3 with a 6.50 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP in five road starts and both starters have a Weighted On-Base Average (wOBA) above .307 and Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) above 4.49.
