Surging San Diego Padres Can Beat Washington Nationals

The red-hot San Diego Padres open a three-game series against the reeling Washington Nationals. The Padres have won three straight games while the Nationals have lost two of their last three.

Nationals shortstop Trea Turner is on the injured list with a finger injury and star third baseman Anthony Rendon, who leads the team hitting .371 with six home runs, 18 RBIs and a .451 OBP, has missed the last four games after getting hit by a pitch in the left arm and his status for tonight is questionable.

The Padres are on a roll behind rookie phenom shortstop Fernando Tatis, Jr., star third baseman Manny Machado and outfielder Wil Myers, who is 4-for-13 with two home runs and a double against tonight's starter Max Scherzer. Myers is also off to a solid start this season, hitting .286 with five home runs and 11 RBI. Manny Machado, on the other hand, is 3-for-28 (.107) with 13 strikeouts against Scherzer.

Pitching Matchup:

Matt Strahm (0-2, 3.05 ERA, 1.16 WHIP) vs. Max Scherzer (1-3, 4.45 ERA, 1.24 WHIP)

Matt Strahm has been a pleasant surprise and he threw eight strong innings of one-run ball to get a no-decision in last Friday's 3-2 loss against the Reds. The 27-year-old will make his first start against the Nationals. He's 0-1 with a 15.43 ERA and a 3.33 WHIP in two relief appearances against them, both last season.

Nationals ace Max Scherzer injured his rib cage with a foul ball last weekend in Miami and he's still expected to make this start despite dealing with a left intercostal muscle strain. Scherzer struggled against the Marlins last Saturday, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits (one home run) with nine strikeouts and no walks in a 9-3 loss.

The right-hander is 3-2 with a 2.34 ERA and an 0.95 WHIP in nine career starts against the Padres, recording 85 strikeouts and 18 walks in 57 2/3 innings.

MLB Trends:

The San Diego Padres are:

11-2 in their last 13 games following an off day

5-1 in their last six games following a win

8-3 in their last 11 during game 1 of a series

The Washington Nationals are:

2-5 in their last seven home games against a team with a road winning percentage above .600

7-25 in their last 32 when their opponent scores two runs or less in their previous game

3-13 in their last 16 during game 1 of a series

1-5 in their last six games against a left-handed starter

0-8 in their last eight games following an off day

0-7 in their last seven Friday games

1-4 in Scherzer's last five home starts

1-4 in Scherzer's last five starts

The current Padres lineup has a .576 OPS against Scherzer in their careers and they've struck out 34.1 percent of the time but he has career-worsts with a 4.45 ERA and a .395 BABIP (Batting Average on Ball in Play) and I like San Diego at this price.
