Tonight the San Diego Padres host the San Francisco Giants in the second game of a four-game, season-opening series at Petco Park.
Eric Lauer threw six scoreless innings and four relievers preserved a 2-0 shutout win over the Giants yesterday. Manny Machado went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts but Fernando Tatis Jr. singled twice in his major league debut and Wil Myers hit a solo home run and drove another run to help the Padres go above .500 for the first time since June 8, 2015.
Madison Bumgarner took the loss after surrendering two earned runs on five hits over seven innings and Evan Longoria went 2-for-4 but the Giants left four runners on base.
Derek Holland (7-9, 3.57 ERA, 1.29 WHIP last season) vs. Joey Lucchesi (8-9, 4.08 ERA, 1.29 WHIP last season)
Derek Holland improved significantly last season, dropping his ERA from 6.20 with the White Sox in 2017 to 3.57 with the Giants in 36 appearances (30 starts), going 7-9. The left-hander was 7-14 with the White Sox in 2017.
Holland surrendered 31 in 135 innings in 2017, compared with 19 in 171 1/3 innings with the Giants last season and keeping the ball in the park will be one of the keys to his success this year. He was 1-1 with a 5.47 ERA in five starts against the Padres last season.
Joey Lucchesi was 8-9 with a 4.08 ERA in 26 starts last season, averaging exactly five innings per start. The left-hander led the Padres with 130 strikeouts and he was 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA in two starts against the Giants last season.
The Under is:
8-1 in San Francisco's last nine games after allowing two runs or less in their previous game
16-5-1 in San Francisco's last 22 games after scoring 2 runs or less in their previous game
7-1 in Holland's last eight starts overall
4-0 in San Diego's last four games against a left-handed starter
9-4 in San Diego's last 13 games when their opponent scored two runs or less in their previous game
7-3-1 in the last 11 meetings
7-3 in Lance Barksdale's last 10 Friday games behind home plate
The Giants haven't been able to put together offense over the last few years and Holland can limit the damage against this potent Padres lineup.
