The Pepperdine Waves try to get back on track when they visit the reeling UC Riverside Highlanders. Pepperdine is coming off a 90-83 home loss against CSU Northridge last Monday while UC Riverside has lost three straight games.
Pepperdine led by as many as 10 points in the first half and took a 57-52 lead when Colbey Ross hit a 3-pointer with 16:23 to play but Terrell Gomez scored 13 of his 19 points after that, including a 3-point play that helped spark a 17-2 run over the next six minutes that gave CSU Northridge a 10-point lead.
Darryl Polk Jr. cut Pepperdine's deficit to 71-65 with nine minutes to play but that's as close as they would get. Colbey Ross led Pepperdine with 24 points and 11 assists and Eric Cooper Jr. added 17 points and four rebounds but the Waves shot just 42.0 percent from the field (29-for-69) and 41.4 percent from 3-point range (12-for-29).
Valparaiso never trailed in their 82-73 win last Sunday, when they used an early 15-5 run to make it 30-16 and never look back against UC Riverside. Menno Dijkstra and Ajani Kennedy made back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 57-52 with 12:23 to play but UC Riverside couldn't get closer. Dikymbe Martin had 21 points in the loss and Dragan Elkaz added 12 but UC Riverside was outrebounded 32-24 and they let Valparaiso shoot 60.0 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from 3-point range.
NCAA Basketball Trends:
The Pepperdine Waves are:
3-8 ATS in their last 11 Thursday games
2-6 ATS in their last eight games against a team with a winning percentage below .400
1-4 ATS in their last five road games following three or more consecutive home games
2-8 ATS in their last 10 games against a team with a losing straight up record
1-4 ATS in their last five games against Big West Conference opponents
The UC Riverside Highlanders are:
5-1 ATS in their last six games against a team with a winning percentage above .600
9-2-1 ATS in their last 12 games following a straight up loss
9-4 ATS in their last 13 games against a team with a winning straight up record
I like UC Riverside to stay in the game at home behind Dikymbe Martin and Dragan Elkaz. Martin has scored 20+ points three different times this season and he's found success from behind the arc, making 38.5 percent of his shots and Elkaz leads the team with 18 3-pointers, shooting a potent 50.0 percent, tied for first in the Big West Conference.
NCAA Basketball Pick: UC Riverside +6 (-115) at Jazz Sports
