For the second straight year, the Fresno State Bulldogs battle the Boise State Broncos in the Mountain West Conference Championship Game at Albertsons Stadium on Saturday.
This will be the fourth meeting between Fresno State and Boise State in just over a year and the third time they will meet in the Mountain West Conference Championship Game since 2014.
Boise State has won seven straight, including victories over two ranked opponents, 24-17 against then-No. 23 Fresno State on November 9 and 33-24 against then-No. 21 Utah State to claim the Mountain Division title last Saturday.
This is a rematch from last year's Mountain West Conference Championship Game, which Boise State won 17-14 at home. Fresno State is just 6-15 against Boise State all-time and they're winless at Albertsons Stadium in the FBS era.
Fresno State outscored Boise State 47-30 in the first three quarters of the last three meetings, holding them to 10 points each time but the Broncos have dominated the fourth quarter 28-12, completely silencing Fresno State in the two fourth quarters at Albertsons Stadium.
The Boise State seven-game winning streak has five games that were decided in the fourth quarter, where this team plays their best football. In those five games they've outscored their opponents 37-20 in the fourth quarter, with only two of those opponents scoring a touchdown.
College Football Trends:
The Fresno State Bulldogs are:
3-7 ATS in their last 10 meetings in Boise State
The Boise State Broncos are:
4-0-1 ATS in their last five conference games
6-1 ATS in their last seven games after accumulating more than 450 total yards in their previous game
4-1-1 ATS in their last six games following a straight up win
4-1-1 ATS in their last six games overall
5-2 ATS in their last seven home games against a team with a winning road record
38-17-2 ATS in their last 57 games after allowing more than 280 yards passing in their previous game
The key to this game will be which team can execute in the closing minutes. Boise State closed out the November 9 game with two fourth quarter touchdowns, a fourth-down stop in their own territory and a first down run to extinguish the game clock and win 24-17.
Boise State is playing very well and Albertsons Stadium is a tough environment for road teams because of the incredible atmosphere. Brett Rypien (3,580 passing yards, 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions) and Alexander Mattison (1,215 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on 262 carries), who ran for 578 yards in his last four games, give the Broncos the edge on offense, which can carry them to another Mountain West Conference title.
