Two of the best teams in the country clash when the Auburn Tigers battle the Duke Blue Devils in a semifinal game of the Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii.
The Auburn Tigers kicked off the Maui Invitational with an exciting 88-79 overtime win against the Xavier Musketeers last night behind 26 points, five assists and four rebounds from Bryce Brown and 25 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals from Jared Harper. Auburn recorded 10 steals and forced 22 turnovers against Xavier and they're a team that likes to push the tempo and shoot 3-pointers (11-for-35 on Monday).
The Tigers are averaging 95.0 points per game (9th in the nation), they grab 46.0 rebounds per game (13th), dish out 17.5 assists per game (45th) and allow 63.8 points per game (64th). Jared Harper leads Auburn with 17.5 points and 7.5 assists while making 46.7 percent of this 3-point attempts, Bryce Brown is averaging 16.8 points per game and Chuma Okeke adds 13.8 points and a team-best 8.3 rebounds.
Duke Blue Devils
The Duke Blue Devils cruised to a 90-64 win against the San Diego State Aztecs on Monday. RJ Barrett scored 20 points, Cam Reddish had 16 and Zion Williamson added 13 points in 18 minutes to help Duke improve to 16-0 in Maui. The five-time Maui Invitational champions prefer to play an up-tempo pace, so San Diego State clogged the middle and forced them to beat them from outside, which worked for well for Duke, as they drained 10 of 25 3-pointers.
The Blue Devils are averaging 96.5 points per game (6th in the nation), they grab 46.8 rebounds per game (6th), dish out 20.3 assists per game (12th) and allow 66.5 points per game (100th). RJ Barrett leads Duke with 24.0 points and 4.8 assists, Zion Williamson is averaging 22.3 points and a team-best 9.5 rebounds and Cam Reddish adds 16.5 points per game.
NCAA Basketball Trends:
The Over is:
8-3 in Auburn's last 11 Tuesday games
4-0 in Duke's last four games against SEC opponents
4-1 in Duke's last five neutral site games
6-2 in Duke's last eight Tuesday games
14-5 in Duke's last 19 non-conference games
The Auburn defense will have their hands full against freshman RJ Barret, Zion Williamson and Cam Reddish, who combined for 49 points against San Diego State but Duke also has plenty of depth with Tre Jones, Jack White, Javin DeLaurier and Antonio Vrankovic. The Auburn guard tandem of Jared Harper and Bryce Brown combined for 51 points against Xavier and is one of the best Duke has seen.
I'm leaning towards the Over here, the line has not been set and it should be high but these are two teams that play at a fast pace, have a lot of firepower, decent rebounding skills and both rank in the top 10 in adjusted efficiency margin according to the metrics at KenPom.com.
