The red-hot UAB Blazers visit the Texas A&M Aggies in a non-conference contest on Saturday. Texas A&M won the last meeting between these two teams, 56-19 in 2009.
UAB Blazers
The UAB Blazers have won eight straight games, including last Saturday's 26-23 overtime victory against the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles, when Spencer Brown scored the game-winning 17-yard touchdown run in overtime. UAB outgained Southern Mississippi in total yards, 304-165 but they turned the ball over three times.
Tyler Johnston III completed 14 of 27 passes for 207 yards, one touchdown, three interceptions and one fumble and he added 12 yards and one touchdown on the ground and Kailon Carter made four receptions for 92 yards and one touchdown.
The Blazers are averaging 195.3 passing yards (98th in the nation) and 238.0 rushing yards (16th). UAB ranks 38th with 33.1 points per game and 4th with 13.2 points against. Tyler Johnston III has passed for 504 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions, Spencer Brown has 913 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on 197 carries and Xavier Ubosi has 18 receptions for 505 yards and five touchdowns.
Texas A&M Aggies
The Texas A&M Aggies beat Ole Miss 38-24 last Saturday, when sophomore Kellen Mond rebounded from turning the ball over in the first two drives of the second half to lead them to four scoring drives.
Mond completed 19 of 28 passes for 236 yards, three touchdowns and one interception and he also ran for 19 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries. Trayveon Williams finished with 228 rushing yards and one touchdown on 31 carries and Jace Sternberger caught four passes for 76 receiving yards.
The Aggies are averaging 266.5 passing yards (34th in the nation) and 196.0 rushing yards (43rd). Texas A&M ranks 70th with 29.5 points per game and 37th with 22.4 points against. Kellen Mond has passed for 2,488 yards, 15 touchdowns and eight interceptions, Trayveon Williams has 1,159 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 197 carries and Jace Sternberger has 38 receptions for 644 yards and six touchdowns.
College Football Trends:
The UAB Blazers are:
3-10 ATS in their last 13 games on grass
1-5 ATS in their last six games against SEC opponents
The Texas A&M Aggies are:
8-2 ATS in their last 10 games on grass
7-2 ATS in their last nine games against a team with a winning record
8-3 ATS in their last 11 games overall
8-3 ATS in their last 11 games against Conference USA opponents
UAB's performance against Southern Mississippi last week didn't impress me and Tyler Johnston III was erratic, which can cost them in what will be their biggest test this season. Kellen Mond has committed four turnovers in the last two weeks but his resilience last week was admirable and if he takes better care of the ball is hard to see Johnston III keeping up with him.
