Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum
The California Golden Bears look to get back on track when they collide with the USC Trojans in what should to be a fun-to-watch Pac-12 contest at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Saturday night.
California Golden Bears
The California Golden Bears suffered a tough 19-13 road loss against the Washington State Cougars in a classic clash of styles between Washington State's Air Raid offense against California's strong pass defense.
Cal were driving for a go-ahead touchdown when Brandon McIlwain was intercepted in the end zone by Skyler Thomas midway through the fourth quarter and then Washington State missed a 30-yard field goal with 3:31 to play, giving them a chance to take the lead but they went three and out and then Gardner Minshew threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Easop Winston Jr. with 32 seconds left to make it 19-13 Washington State and win. Chase Garbers completed 15 of 26 passes for 127 yards, one touchdown and one interception and Brandon McIlwain completed 3 of 7 passes for 52 yards and an interception.
The Golden Bears are averaging 205.7 passing yards (90th in the nation) and 175.7 rushing yards (60th). California ranks 107th with 23.8 points per game and 31st with 21.9 points against. Chase Garbers has passed for 1,007 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions, Patrick Laird has 700 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 160 carries and Vic Wharton III has 40 receptions for 394 yards.
The USC Trojans beat the Oregon State Beavers 38-21 on Saturday night behind 205 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries from Aca'Cedric Ware, including 57-yard and 62-yard scoring sprints. JT Daniels completed 14 of 26 passes for 177 yards and one touchdown and Vavae Malepeai ran for 101 yards on 15 carries for a USC team that averaged 7.5 yards per carry. USC's offense looked particularly crisp to open the game and at the start of the second half, they ended a two-game losing streak and now they just need one more win to become bowl eligible.
The Trojans are averaging 235.9 passing yards (62nd in the nation) and 144.3 rushing yards (98th). USC ranks 79th with 28.3 points per game and 74th with 27.9 points against. JT Daniels has passed for 1,806 yards, nine touchdowns and seven interceptions, Aca'Cedric Ware has 627 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 90 carries and Michael Pittman Jr. has 27 receptions for 561 yards and six touchdowns.
College Football Trends:
The California Golden Bears are:
17-36 ATS in their last 53 games following a straight up loss
2-7 ATS in their last nine meetings with the USC Trojans
The USC Trojans are:
7-1-1 ATS in their last nine games in November
8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 games after accumulating more than 200 rushing yards in their previous game
7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 games following an ATS win
The California defense is strong but their offense is suspect at best and USC has plenty of talent, even if Stephen Carr (ankle) and Michael Pittman Jr. (shoulder) miss this game. I like the USC defense to step up and help them get the cover. The favorite is 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings and California hasn't beaten USC since a 34-31 triple-overtime victory on September 27, 2003.
