2018 US Open Preview & Betting Odds

The second major of the season, the US Open, makes a long-awaited return to Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York on Thursday. Shinnecock Hills, a 7,440-yard par 70, will host this event for the fifth time in it's 127-year history and the first since 2004.

Just like in the Masters, which was won by Patrick Reed (+4000), this week's field looks wide open.

Brooks Koepka (+2000) won at Erin Hills last year, when he held off Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama and Brian Harman to earn his first major win and he will try to become the first player to successfully defend his US Open title since Curtis Strange in 1988-89. Koepka missed three months with a wrist injury but he has a top 11 and a runner-up finish since his return, as well as enough power and short-game poise to pull off more wins.

Phil Mickelson (+3000) is a six-time runner-up at the US Open and he's looking for his career Grand Slam. Mickelson has five top 6 finishes this year and he's coming off consecutive top 15 finishes.

Most of the attention is on Tiger Woods (+2000), a 14-time major champion who recently made it back into the top 100 in the world ranking after returning from his fourth back surgery since 2014. Woods is after his first win in a major since the 2008 US Open.

Dustin Johnson (+700) became the top player in the official world golf ranking after winning the FedEx St. Jude Classic last week and he has nine wins in the last two years, including the 2016 US Open.

Justin Thomas (+1500) and Justin Rose (+1500) are also players to watch this year. Rose finished outside the top 23 just once since last year's PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy (+1200) won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and finished second at the BMW PGA Championship but he missed some cuts. Watch out for Jason Day (+1600), Jordan Spieth (+1600) and Kyle Stanley (+5000).
