2023 VALERO TEXAS OPEN ODDS, PICK & PREVIEW

For most of the world’s top golfers, this week is a time to rest and prepare for the most anticipated Masters ever next week. However, for some other golfers, it’s their last chance to qualify and earn a trip to Augusta, and a win this week at one the oldest tournaments on the PGA Tour, the 2023 Valero Texas Open, will punch their ticket.

2023 VALERO TEXAS OPEN ODDS, PICK & PREVIEW

Venue: TPC San Antonio – San Antonio, Texas

Date: March 30 – April 2, 2023

Defending Champion: J.J. Spaun

Purse: $8.9 million

This will be the 101st edition of the Texas Open, making it the third-oldest tournament on the PGA Tour and the oldest to be held in the same city. With a lot of the top golfers preparing for next week, the field this week may be watered down, but that’s not how I’m looking at it.

There are 20 players slated to tee off who rank between 32nd and 84th in the Official World Golf Rankings, and fan favorites like Rickie Fowler and Matt Kuchar will be looking for a victory to earn a trip to Augusta. Other notable players set to play in the 2023 Texas Open are already heading to the Masters next week, including the 2021 Masters champ Hideki Matsuyama, Tyrrell Hatton, and Corey Conners, the 2019 Texas Open winner.

Returning this year is defending champion J.J. Spaun, who got his first tour victory last season in San Antonio. If there’s one thing this tournament has taught us over the years is not to count anyone out, as this is the tournament for longshots and first-time winners.

2023 VALERO TEXAS OPEN FAVORITE GOLFERS

Jazzsports lists Hatton as the +1000 favorite in its latest Valero Texas Open odds, with four others shorter than +2200. Corey Conners at +1500, Rickie Fowler at +1800, Si Woo Kim at +1800, and Taylor Montgomery at +2000. Hideki Matsuyama and Davis Riley at +2200 are next in line, followed by Matt Kuchar at +2500 and Chris Kirk at +2800

2023 VALERO TEXAS OPEN FIELD

TPC San Antonio winds through the slender corridors of the Cibolo Canyons, just north of Texas’s second most populous city. With fairways lined by brush and mature oak trees, tricky pin positions on elevated greens, and one of the most challenging sets of par 5s on Tour, it plays as the 14th toughest annual PGA course, with golfers averaging 0.14 strokes over par per round. In addition, it has a unique layout that causes strategic angles for approach shots due to the narrow tree-lined alleys with wider fairways, so accuracy will be the name of the game this week when picking your golfer this week.

2023 VALERO TEXAS OPEN PLAYERS

Let’s start with two of the favorites, Hatton and Matsuyama, who both enter with question marks surrounding their health. 

Hatton is currently listed as the favorite at +1000, as projected by Jazzsports.ag/*, and if this were any other week, he would be my runaway favorite. Matsuyama is currently listed at +2200 and has not been very consistent this year, but I’m staying away from both this week, as I almost expect them to withdraw before Thursday. Hatton suffered a hand injury that affected his performance last week in Austin, and Matsuyama continues to be hampered by a lingering neck injury. Not to throw shade on San Antonio, but if there is even a question for either, they will withdraw in order to rest for the biggest stage on the golfing calendar next week, so stay away from both this week when making your wagers.

Matt Wallace

My sleeper of the week is Matt Wallace, who is currently listed at +3000 by Jazzsports.ag/*. As you know, I’m always a big fan of momentum, and there aren’t many in the field with more momentum than Wallace this week. Wallace has been knocking on the door for the last few weeks culminating in his first win this past weekend in the alternate-field event at the Corales Puntacana Championship. The only negative to the win last week was that it doesn’t qualify him for entry into Augusta next week, so he needs to win this week in order to book his flight to the east coast. Wallace has some history here at the Valero, where he finished third in 2021. Look for Wallace to continue his hot play and compete all weekend for the trophy.

Ben Martin

My surprise of the week is Ben Martin, who is currently listed at +6500 by Jazzsports.ag/*, which seems like a steal this week. Martin has been playing well and keeps rolling along after a T8 finish last week at the Corales Puntacana Championship. That came on the heels of a T5 at the Honda Classic and T13 at Pebble Beach. Martin seems to be heating up at the right time as he has also made five consecutive cuts and seven of his past nine, which has led to ranking sixth in the field in S.G.: Ball-Striking, 12th in S.G.: Tee-to-Green and fifth in S.G. His history at TPC San Antonio is also quite good, having made three of four cuts, including each of his past three.

Rickie Fowler

Has anyone been following the resurgence of Rickie Fowler this season? It’s weird to say resurgence for a 34-year-old golfer, but after a few tough years, it’s really nice to see Rickie Fowler competing this year. The No. 59 player in the Official World Golf Ranking already has three top-10 finishes in the 2022-23 PGA Tour season, including a runner-up finish at the ZOZO Championship last fall. Jazzsports.ag/* currently has him listed at +1800, which seems like a fair number for a guy that needs to win in order to join the field in the 2023 Masters next week. 

If Fowler doesn’t win this week, he will be watching on tv for the third consecutive season, and that’s not going to sit well with him, especially since he’s been playing so well. The 34-year-old just missed winning his group at the Match Play, where he beat world No. 2 Jon Rahm and also has five top-25 finishes in his past six tournaments. I would not be surprised to see Fowler battling all weekend, and I expect him to maintain his solid play all the way to the winner’s circle this weekend.
