USA's Zur out in 500m, Canada's van Koeverden advances

Beijing, China (Sports Network) - Rami Zur of the United States has been eliminated from the canoe/kayak competition at the Beijing Olympics, finishing sixth in his semifinal heat of the men's kayak single 500 meters.

Canada's Adam van Koeverden won the first heat with a time of 1 minute, 42.438 seconds and Zur was 4.725 seconds behind that pace. Zur was competing at his second Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, van Koeverden moved to his second final, having already earned a spot in the final of the kayak single 1,000m on Friday. The Canadian won gold in the 500 and bronze in the 1,000 four years ago in Athens. He broke his own record in the 500 meters in Tuesday's quarterfinal round.

Joining van Koeverden in Saturday's final will be eight other qualifiers, including the other heat-winners, Ben Fouhy of New Zealand and Croatia's Stjepan Janic.

In the men's canoe single 500m, Ukraine's Iurii Cheban and Hungary's Attila Sandor Vajda won their heats to head a group of nine riders in the final.

Zhong Hongyan of China won her heat in the women's kayak single 500m and will be joined in the final by eight other competitors, including Inna Osypenko- Radomska of the Ukraine, winner of the first heat.

Romania, Bulgaria and Canada earned berths in the men's canoe double 500m final. Teams from China, Russia, Poland, Germany, Belarus and Ukraine had previously qualified.

Kayak double 500m ran semifinal heats on both the men's and women's sides. Japan, Finland and Austria moved on to the final for the women and Canada, Poland and Denmark placed teams in the men's medal round.

The final rounds for all of Thursday's events will take place on Saturday.
