Beijing, China (Sports Network) - Bryan Clay of the United States is in the lead after three events of the men's decathlon at the Beijing Olympics.
Clay finished first in the 100 meters and the long jump and second in the shot put. He has 2862 points at the end of Thursday's morning session to lead Ukraine's Oleksiy Kasyanov by 145 points. Trey Hardee of the U.S. is third with 2657 points.
Russia's Alexander Pogorelov is in fourth place -- 25 points behind Hardee.
Clay ran a 10.44 split in the 100, turned in a jump of 7.78 meters and had a throw of 16.27 meters in the shot put. Hardee finished second to Clay in the running and jumping events, but was 30th in the shot put.
Tom Pappas of the U.S. dropped out of the decathlon after the long jump, citing a foot injury. Pappas was in 12th place after the second event.
The decathlon continues on Thursday night with competition in the high jump and 400 meters before wrapping up with the remaining five events on Friday.
Fifteen competitors cleared 1.93 meters to move on to the women's high jump final, but only one of three American competitors qualified for Saturday's medal round.
Chaunte Howard advanced, while fellow U.S. jumpers Amy Acuff and Sharon Day failed to qualify. Acuff finished fourth in the high jump four years ago in Athens.
All three U.S. javelin throwers were eliminated from the men's competition on Thursday. Americans Leigh Smith, Breaux Greer and Mike Hazle failed to finish in the top-12 of qualifying.
Greer, a three-time Olympian, was third at the world championships last year, but has battled shoulder and hand injuries this season.
