Wie disqualified; Tseng leads at State Farm

Sat 19th, July 2008

Springfield, IL (Sports Network) - For the second time in her career, Michelle Wie was disqualified from an LPGA Tour event.

Saturday at the State Farm Classic, Wie posted a five-under 67 to finish one shot out of the lead at 17-under-par 199. After the round, however, she was disqualified from the event for a violation that occurred on Friday.

After Friday's second round, Wie left the scoring area before signing her scorecard. She was alerted by members from the scoring tent and returned to sign the card.

The LPGA Tour did not discover the violation until Saturday after Wie had begun her third round, and it made the decision to not speak with her until after she completed the round, at which point she was disqualified.

"I don't know what happened to me," Wie stated. "I usually sign it first, but I forgot to sign the scorecard and unfortunately left the tent area. A couple of the scoring ladies ran after me, then I signed it and turned it in.

"I thought I'd be okay, but it was an honest mistake. I don't know why or how it happened. I just forgot to sign it. It's very unfortunate. I was playing well. Hopefully it won't happen again, it's a good learning experience."

Yani Tseng, who claimed her first major championship in June, has carried that momentum over to this week. She fired her third straight six-under 66 Saturday to grab a two-shot lead after three rounds at Panther Creek Country Club. She completed 54 holes at 18-under-par 198.

Wie would have been second at minus-17 after her 67.

Katie Futcher matched Tseng's 66 and is now alone in second place at 16-under- par 200.

Before Wie 's disqualification, the story of the day was Hee-Won Han. The six- time winner on the LPGA Tour fired an 11-under 61 to jump into a share of third place at 15-under-par 201. She was joined there by Ji Young Oh, who shot 69 Saturday.

"I just hit the fairway, hit the green, and made putts -- that's it today," said Han.

Second-round leader Christina Kim stumbled to a one-over 73 to fall into a share of seventh place at minus-12.

Wie was also disqualified in her pro debut at the 2005 Samsung World Championship for incorrectly dropping a ball in the third round and signing an incorrect scorecard. Afterwards, she called it a learning experience.

Not that it matters now, but she had a great back-and-forth with Tseng on Saturday.

Wie birdied the first two holes to take the lead at 14-under. Tseng also birdied the first, but parred the next four holes.

Tseng, who earned her first win earlier this year at the McDonald's LPGA Championship, eagled the par-five sixth and followed with a birdie on seven to grab a one-shot lead at 16-under. Tseng s now four-under through three rounds on the par-five sixth.

Wie moved within one of the lead when she birdied the sixth for the third straight day. However, she gave that shot right back with a bogey on the par- four seventh.

Tseng parred six consecutive holes from the eighth. During that run, Wie flew by her and back into the lead.

Wie dropped in back-to-back birdies from the 10th to tie Tseng in the lead at 16-under. Wie dropped her approach within five feet at the 12th and rolled that putt in for birdie and the lead.

At the par-five 13th, Wie missed the green left. However, she got up and down for birdie to move to 18-under. That was Wie's third birdie in three days at No. 13.

Tseng nearly aced the par-three 14th when her tee ball landed just beyond the pin and spun back within inches of the cup. She tapped in to get to 17-under.

The 19-year-old Tseng got up and down for birdie at 16 to move to minus-18, then parred the last two to end there.

"Today I'm really happy. I hit it very solid with my irons," Tseng said. "I feel very comfortable.

Wie parred four in a row from the 14th. At the par-four 18th, she missed the green left again. Wie chipped within seven feet, but missed the par-saving putt to fall one shot back at minus-17.
