Lions roar, keep Blue Bombers winless

Fri 18th, July 2008

Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Jarious Jackson's 48-yard touchdown pass to Geroy Simon helped lift the British Columbia Lions to a 27-18 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Jackson completed 23-of-38 passes for 396 yards and two interceptions for the Lions (2-2), who defeated the Blue Bombers, 42-24, last week at Winnipeg. Stefan Logan amassed 77 yards on 14 carries, while Paris Jackson had six receptions for 114 yards. Simon caught five passes for 117 yards. Paul McCallum was 4-for-5 in field goal attempts.

Before the game, the Lions held a moment of silence to honor the memory of club president Bob Ackles, who died of a heart attack on July 6. After the game the team held a memorial service on the field for Ackles, who was 69.

Kevin Glenn completed 18-of-28 passes for 256 yards with one touchdown and three costly interceptions for the Blue Bombers (0-4), who remain the league's only winless team. Charles Roberts rushed for 51 yards on 12 carries and caught a team-high six passes for 53 yards. Romby Bryant made five catches for 146 yards and one score.

Trailing 18-11 after three quarters, the Lions' offense collected points on four straight possessions in the final stanza. After McCallum's 25-yarder split the uprights, Jackson connected with Simon for a 48-yard touchdown to give BC a 21-18 lead.

McCallum booted a 20-yard field goal to put the Lions up by a 24-18 margin.

Glenn completed a 52-yard pass to Bryant on the first play of the ensuing drive, spotting the ball at the Lions 23. Following a four-yard scamper by Roberts, Glenn was intercepted in the end zone by Korey Banks with about five minutes to go in regulation.

McCallum's 10-yard field goal made it 27-18.

The Blue Bombers opened the scoring with a 74-yard strike from Glenn to Bryant with about seven minutes left in the first quarter. BC answered with a single on its next possession.

A 12-yard field goal from McCallum narrowed the deficit to 7-4 with less than three minutes gone in the second quarter. Winnipeg responded with a 42- yard field goal by Alexis Serna, but BC grabbed an 11-10 lead when Banks stepped in front of a pass intended for wide receiver Derick Armstrong and raced 37 yards to the end zone. A Winnipeg single with under two minutes remaining forged an 11-11 tie at the half.

The Blue Bombers reclaimed the lead in the third on Cam Hall's 22-yard interception return.
